Uncommon Threads resulted after "many years of talk and one year of action." Owner Donna Kohut has been involved in some type of handwork since childhood. Across a lifetime and despite professional demands and time constraints she has experimented cross-stitch and crochet, knitting, weaving, needle point, and crewel embroidery. Following 20 years of rewarding work in municipal finance (in Ohio and Marquette) however, she knew it was time for a change - a time to dedicate herself to a lifelong passion for handwork. And while interests may alter over time, handwork remained a lifetime companion. So when it came time to make that change, there was little doubt which direction she would take. |

Along with her husband, Donna took the Northern Initiatives Entrepreneurial Course. Backed by research which revealed a resurgence of interest in fiber arts - in part due to its medically proven benefits as a stress reliever - they put together a plan for a yarn store. A year after beginning their course, Uncommon Threads became a valuable resource to local handwork artisans and others interested in traditional fiber arts, and remains an asset to a new generation of weavers, knitters and others who keep these arts alive.
